Surgical Orthopedic Coordinator

General Description:
Under the general supervision of the Director of Surgical Services, as well as the Perioperative Services Manager and under the direct supervision of the Clinical Coordinator, the Surgical Orthopedic Coordinator provides support and assistance in the care of the patient undergoing invasive and other surgical procedures related to Orthopedic surgery.

Key Responsibilities:

Administrative
  • Manage Orthopedic surgery schedule.
  • Order and maintain inventory of instruments and accessories.
  • Order and maintain ancillary supplies related to Orthopedic surgery.
  • Maintain and update Operating Room (OR)/Hospital protocols related to Orthopedic surgery.
  • Manage and update preference cards.

Technical
  • Maintain and organize equipment needs, surgical trays, and case carts.
  • Coordinate OR room set up for Orthopedic procedures to meet start time requirements.
  • In-service OR Nursing and SPD staff on pre-, intra-, and post-operative management of Orthopedic surgery.

Clinical
  • Clinical troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate efficient and organized surgical team set up for procedures.
  • Assist as scrub nurse or first assistant at the patient side (If applicable).
  • Supervise the preparation and positioning of patients.
  • Maintain records of surgical procedure pathways and guidelines.
  • Document procedure results and assist with procedure data collection and management.
  • Target and support new surgeons interested in Orthopedic surgery.
  • Develop and maintain a clinical pathway for Orthopedic surgery surgical teams

.Other
  • In-service Sterile Processing regarding cleaning and sterilization of instruments and accessories.
  • Serve as point person for Orthopedic related questions (Admin or Clinical).
  • Liaison between hospital, vendor(s) and health care professionals.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned.
  • Knows fire, disaster and safety procedures and regulations as it pertains to the work area.

Requirements:

Formal Education:
  • Vocational or other technical school, certification, training, or apprenticeship required beyond high school.

Work Experience:
  • 2 years to < 3 years (Operating Room); 1 year to < 2 years (Orthopedic Surgery)

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:
  • Certified Surgical Technologist required
  • Basic Life Support Certification required
  • Advanced Life Support Certification required within 6 months of hire.
  • First Assistant, preferred
