General Description:
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Surgical Services, the Perioperative Education Coordinator is responsible for compliance to regulatory, departmental and organizational standards, staff development of personnel in the Perioperative setting, and supportive management functions. This position ensures that efforts are ongoing for continuous improvement in all Perioperative areas and standards and that staff receive appropriate training and maintain job specific competency to ensure appropriateness and effectiveness of services. This position has a dual reporting structure with a direct report to the Director of Surgical Services and a dotted line report to the Manager, People Development. Key Responsibilities:
  • Supports all Perioperative and organizational process and performance improvement initiatives to improve the effectiveness of nursing practice. Assists with data collection as indicated.
  • Acts as resource to TJC, CMS, OSHA, etc. for Perioperative Services. Provides nursing/physician education and hospital education opportunities. Participates on committees as assigned, supporting quality assurance activities including initiating, reviewing and revising policies and procedures and participates in ongoing process improvement initiatives related to Perioperative Services.
  • Coordinates with People Development to formulate a plan for education and development of new and tenured staff to assure optimum patient outcomes based on individual patient needs for the planned procedure to include competency cross-training opportunities and for meeting regulatory compliance. Provides input to the responsible coordinator and department Manager.
  • Assess and determine the educational needs of care partners and patients. Develop with People Development an action plan to address these needs.
  • Development and roll out of the of the Periop 101 program.
  • Maintain educational files and assist in care partner performance evaluations.
  • Works in a clinical role in Perioperative Services as needed to maintain quality staffing and ensure maintenance of clinical skills.
  • Responsible for the successful onboarding of newly hired care partners into the perioperative services area to include but not limited to nurses and techs. Must be able to work in the different areas of the OR in order to precept, orient and mentor care partners.
  • Assists with maintaining department readiness for disasters providing a variety of staff educational opportunities such as classes and self-study courses. Coordinates in-service training for new equipment with vendors, physicians, and staff. Ensures that care partners are competent in operating new equipment prior to placing into service.
  • Coordinates and teaches Codes specific to Perioperative Services i.e. Malignant Hyperthermia, Fire Drill, Maternal Hemorrhage, Code Blue etc.
  • Knowledgeable of current standards within Perioperative Services (AORN, ASPAN, AAMI, etc.)
  • Coordinates clinical rotations for school affiliations in healthcare programs i.e. Surgical Tech, RN student etc.
  • Acts as a resource for staff educational opportunities. Guides, directs, supervises and involves staff in developing educational programs. Create an education calendar for periop services.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned.
  • Knows fire, disaster and safety procedures and regulations as it pertains to the work area

Requirements:

Formal Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required.
  • Master's degree in nursing preferred.

Work Experience:
  • Minimum of 2-3 years' Operating Room or Perioperative Nursing experience.
    1-year teaching experience preferred

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:
  • State of Florida RN
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications must be obtained through the AHA
  • CNOR required within 18 months of hire date
