General Description:
The Patient Flow Coordinator reports to the Manager of Mission Control. The Patient Flow Coordinator coordinates patient placement and flow, transfer coordination in accordance with established protocols, and state and federal guidelines, while adjusting staffing levels based on organizational needs as directed. Coordinates patient throughput from all points of entry to facilitate overall hospital patient flow by collaborating with the medical staff and other members of the interdisciplinary team in the coordinating, organizing, and planning, of patient movement within the medical center.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates patient placement and flow, transfer coordination in accordance with state and federal guidelines, adjusting staffing levels based on organizational needs as directed by the House Supervisor and/or Manager of Mission Control.
  • Places patients into the appropriate bed assignment by using protocols and department policies and guidelines.
  • Maintains real time accuracy of bed placement software, including but not limited to patient demographic data and patient placement indicators.
  • Utilizes the chain of command for clinical or other situations that are beyond the scope of the placement specialist immediately in order to support flow and the safety of patient placement.
  • Monitors real time throughput metrics and escalates delays in patient flow to the house supervisor and/or unit leadership.
  • Operates and maintains staff scheduling database through the use of computerized and manual systems.
  • Prepares daily staffing assignment coverage, including adjusting for short notice vacancies and variations of patient census in patient care areas as directed by the Manager of Mission Control and/or House Supervisor.
  • Audits scheduling practices to ensure compliance with scheduling deadlines and policies/procedures.
  • Prepares daily throughput reports utilizing bed placement software.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned.
  • Knows fire, disaster and safety procedures and regulations as it pertains to the work area.

Formal Education:
  • Vocational or other technical school, certification, training or apprenticeship required beyond High School.

Work Experience:
  • 1 year to < 2 years related experience required.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:
  • Medical terminology certification preferred, Unit Secretary certification preferred
