General Description:
This position reports to the Patient Access Manager and Director. The Financial Counselor is responsible for promoting and demonstrating Parrish Healthcare's Culture of Choice®; actively and effectively participates in ensuring strategic goals and objectives of the department are met or exceeded; reviews financial clearance worklist daily and visits in-house patients; collecting estimated patient liability amounts; explains all financial information and responsibilities; and works closely with outside agencies to ensure patient's financial coverage.

General Description:
This position reports to the Patient Access Manager and Director. The Financial Counselor is responsible for promoting and demonstrating Parrish Healthcare's Culture of Choice®; actively and effectively participates in ensuring strategic goals and objectives of the department are met or exceeded; reviews financial clearance worklist daily and visits in-house patients; collecting estimated patient liability amounts; explains all financial information and responsibilities; and works closely with outside agencies to ensure patient's financial coverage.
Key Responsibilities:
- Always follow AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) guidelines in all interactions with the patient.
- Always maintain professional image and demonstrate excellent customer service; build trust and respect by consistently meeting and exceeding expectations.
- Always uses two patient identifiers (patient full name and date of birth) for accurate patient identification.
- In conjunction with the Medicaid Eligibility team visit all uninsured patients in-house.
- Visit Inpatients and Observation patients to review benefits and financially clear accounts, providing estimates and performing collections of patient responsibilities as appropriate.
- Provide appropriate estimates to patients and/or physicians as requested.
- Generate insurance verification and precertification reports daily and follow up with case management and insurance verification departments as appropriate.
- Follows all guidelines set forth in the Cash Handling policy.
- Utilizes eligibility systems, on-line websites or phone calls to determine insurance benefits and precertification requirements.
- Assist patients with payment arrangements and in co-ordination with the Medicaid Eligibility team assists patient with financial applications.
- Contact patient employer, if necessary, for verification of employment, premium status, babies being added to policies.
- Escalates any concerns as needed to Patient Access Manager/Supervisor.
- Enter pertinent insurance information into the HIS system (i.e. Meditech).
- Enters appropriate notes for all patient encounters.
- Complete financial analysis and collect estimated patient liabilities.
- Follow up with patients for necessary signatures if they were incomplete at time of hospitalization.
- Attends in-service presentations, and completes mandatory education, including but not limited to, infection control, patient safety, quality improvements, MSDS and OSHA standards.
- Demonstrates knowledge of occurrence reporting system and utilizes system to report potential patient safety issues.
- Always serves to fulfill the mission; practices and adheres to the Code of Conduct/Standards of Behavior/Values.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of organizational policies, procedures and systems.
- Participates in process improvement initiatives.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Knows fire, disaster and safety procedures and regulations as pertains to the work area.
