General Description:
Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Critical Care, Physician, and the registered nurse, the Emergency Medical Technician is responsible for the provision of care for the assigned Emergency Department patients. This employee has access to medication storage areas, may receive, deliver and store medications. The Emergency Medical Technician participates with the registered nurse in planning, coordinating and implementing plan of care to ensure quality, appropriateness, timeliness and effectiveness of service rendered.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provides all aspect of Emergency Department and CDU Care based on established standards. Demonstrates competency in all procedure within scope of practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served; the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient's needs; a knowledge of growth and development; and an understanding of the range of treatment needed by these patients. The employee will demonstrate competence in the care and treatment of the following age groups:
  • Ordering and stocking of supplies for the Emergency Department and CDU.*
  • Set up and assist in special procedures for the physicians and nurses. Which includes obtaining, preparing, and handling supplies, equipment and medicine necessary to perform the procedure. (For Example: Lidocaine, antibiotic cream, betadine) * Position requires access to med room and Pyxis.
  • Transporting patients to med-surg units, OR, Intensive Care, and Telemetry Units, or for discharge home. Observes patients for unsafe behaviors, uses healing conversation to re-direct patient with courtesy and respect.*
  • Application of OCL splinting, Sager and Hare Traction, and other splinting devices. Crutch fitting and patient instruction in crutch walking.*
  • Wound care: complex and minor.*
  • Assist with Cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the Emergency Department and house wide. Responsible to obtain RST box and bring it to floor codes. May participate on Code Blue Committee. Complete the following CBL's: Age Appropriate (adult, geriatric, school age, infant & toddlers), Blood Culture, Blood borne Pathogens, Diabetes Education Update, I-STAT review, Restraints Cat. (A,B,C,D), Signs of Abuse and Understanding Tuberculosis. *
  • Participate in ED Process Improvement and Patient Experience Team. Attend 75% of all staff meetings.

Requirements:

Formal Education:
  • Vocational or other technical school, certification, training or apprenticeship required beyond high school.

Work Experience:
  • Minimum one (1) year experience

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:
  • EMT Florida State Certification and/or
  • EMT/Paramedic National Registry Certification and/or
  • Paramedic Florida State Certification
  • BCLS through the American Heart Association
  • ACLS, PALS preferred
