General Description:

The Speech Language Pathologist reports to the Director of Rehabilitative Services. The Speech Language Pathologist is Responsible for administration and direct application of Speech-Language Pathology treatment modalities as prescribed by a referring physician Speech-Language Pathology treatment help to restore function and prevent disability following disease or injury. Provides input in formulating budget, assists in evaluating department performance versus budget controls and takes appropriate action to remain in budget guidelines. The Speech Language Pathologist participates in operational aspects of the department, maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in Performance Improvement (PI) activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Upon physician referral, performs patient evaluations to determine deficits and goals.
  • Able to assess patient pain interfering with optimal level of function or participation in rehabilitation; makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.
  • Formulates an appropriate plan of care based upon identified deficits and evaluates effectiveness of treatment; family is included as appropriate.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning; family is included in teaching as appropriate
  • Performs examinations, such as swallowing examinations, accurately and communicates results timely to all appropriate members of the healthcare team, patient and family as appropriate.
  • Documents appropriately in the medical record for all Speech-Language Pathology treatments, assessments and evaluations performed for the inpatient and outpatient population.
  • Intercedes for the patient when dietary revisions are necessary to prevent aspiration.
  • Maintains records pertinent to the personnel and operation of the department.
  • Provides evaluation of certified staff, including interviewing, hiring, evaluating and termination, in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned.
  • Knows fire, disaster and safety procedures and regulations as it pertains to the work area.


Formal Education:
  • A master's degree or higher in Speech Language Pathology.

Work Experience:
  • 0 to < 1 year experience in all aspects of speech language pathology

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:
  • Current Florida licensure as a Speech Language Pathology.
  • Current BCLS certification.
